The Ashmolean Museum’s Department of Eastern Art first opened its galleries in 1963, following an earlier incarnation in the University of Oxford’s former Indian Institute (1897-1962).
Our wide-ranging collections of Asian art are the most representative in Britain outside London. They range in date from early antiquity to the present day and cover the Islamic world, Indian subcontinent, Himalayan region and Southeast Asia, as well as China and Japan. The collections include paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles and other decorative arts. There is also an archive of historic photographic material and other documentation.
You can search a large part of our collection on the Eastern Art Online website: http://jameelcentre.ashmolean.org/
Visits to our Eastern Art Study Centre to view objects held in our reserve collections may also be made by prior appointment. For information, see: http://www.ashmolean.org/departments/easternart/studycentre/
Established in 2016, the Eastern Art Blog will include occasional articles and shorter pieces by members or associates of the Eastern Art Department, discussing current projects, exciting new discoveries and many other matters of interest.
